Gather Materials: Get an empty plastic water bottle, a few onion bulbs, scissors or a knife, and clean water. Choose bulbs with small sprouts for faster growth.
– Prepare the Bottle: Cut the top part of the bottle off, about 2-3 inches from the cap. This will create an opening wide enough to hold the onion securely. –
– Add Water: Fill the bottle with water up to about 1-2 inches from the top. Ensure the base of the onion bulb will touch the water when placed in the opening.
Place the Onion Bulb: Position the onion bulb in the opening with the root side facing down and the pointed end up. The bottom of the bulb should just touch the water.
Find the Right Spot: Place the setup on a sunny windowsill or any spot that receives 4-6 hours of indirect sunlight daily. Light is crucial for the growth of green shoots.
Monitor Water Levels: Check daily to ensure the water is in contact with the bulb base. Add more water as needed, maintaining the level without fully submerging the bulb.
Change Water Regularly: Replace the water every 3-4 days to prevent stagnation and reduce the risk of bacterial growth that could rot the bulb.
Watch for Growth: In 3-5 days, you should notice roots beginning to grow from the base of the bulb, followed by green shoots sprouting from the top.
Trim Shoots as Needed: Once the green shoots grow 4-6 inches tall, you can trim them for use as green onions. Cutting encourages further growth.
